One of the key features of the OECD guidelines is the minimum ownership control the business must have in the foreign company in order for it to count as FDI.The current guidelines state the ownership must be a minimum 10% of the ordinary shares or voting shares of the company. No netheless, the definitions together with the guidelines are flexible and companies can find themselves under de facto control â" for example, by controlling the technology â" even without the 10% controlling stake.The key featureThe key feature of FDI is essentially that of control. This separates it from a traditional portfolio investment. When a business makes a foreign direct investment, it establishes either effective control or substantial influence over the decision-making process of the business or the operation.This requirement for control is also what provides the structure for determining what counts as FDI and what doesnât. As I noted above, according to the OECD definition, the business must have a 10% minimum ownership stake before its investment counts as FDI.The methods of FDISo, how does a company go about making a FDI? There are a number of different options for gaining control and investing in a company or business operation abroad. The most common methods of F DI include:Opening a subsidiary or an associate company in a foreign countryAcquiring a controlling interest in a company that already exists in the foreign countryMerging with another foreign companyStarting a joint venture with a foreign companyFurthermore, FDI can occur in three strategically different manners. The nature of the foreign direct investment can be:Horizontal â" Horizontal investments occur when the companyâs investment abroad is related directly to the same activities it conducts at home.Verticalâ"In a vertical FDI strategy, the company uses the foreign investment as a way to add new stages of activities abroad. These can be divided into:Forward vertical FDI under which the company takes steps to become closer to the market â" such as acquiring a distributor in the foreign country.Backward vertical FDI which means using international integration towards the acquiring of raw materials â" such as buying a raw material plantation in a foreign company.Conglomerate â" When the business invests in a controlling stake in an unrelated business abroad, the FDI is set to be a conglomerate type. The conglomerate FDI is uncommon, as it sees the company trying to break two barriers at once: entering both in a new country and a new industry.FDI IN ACTION â" EXAMPLE SCENARIOSWhat does the above look in action? Letâs consider an example by examining the different scenarios outlined above through the eyes of Company A.Company A is a clothing company that operates in Italy. The company could embark on FDI by doing the following things:It can open a subsidiary company in China to enter the market. Since it is entering a foreign country in a field directly related to what it does in Italy, itâs making a horizontal FDI.However, it could also buy a controlling stake in a Chinese clothing line. If itâs purchasing another clothing company in China, its investment would still be horizontal. It doesnât have to acquire the whole company, as long as it ha s a controlling stake and itâs part of the decision-making process. Interestingly, even if Company A doesnât have 10% stake, the investment would be considered FDI if it provides the management or the clothing line designs for the business.On the other hand, Company A could decide to merge or simply acquire the Chinese clothing company in full. Again, youâre dealing with a horizontal FDI.If Company A wants to use a vertical FDI strategy, it could purchase a clothing retailer in China and therefore, engage in forward vertical FDI. It wouldnât buy another clothing company, but the retailer would provide it access to the Chinese clothing market. If the company would prefer to make a backward vertical FDI, it could purchase a silk manufacturer that would provide the raw materials for its clothes.Finally, Company A could consider expanding its business operations and invest in a completely unrelated industry. It could, for instance, acquire a Chinese jewellery company and enter t he both the Chinese market and the jewellery industry at once. This would be an example of the rare conglomerate FDI.HOW TO PROFIT FROM FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENTThe United Nations Conference on Trade and Development has found foreign direct investments flows have exceeded over $1 trillion. This is an impressive figure considering the global FDI stood at $14 billion in the 1970s. So, whatâs the attraction? How can a company profit from foreign direct investment?Four key ways for businesses to profit from FDIA business can benefit from FDI in four distinctive ways. These are:Gaining access to new marketsThe most obvious way a business can profit from FDI is by gaining access to new markets and thus, growing the business. The benefit is rather obvious â" as the company invests in the business or starts a new operation in a foreign country, it enters that market and expands its market reach.Increasing market access can help the business grow and expand its profit base. The gains migh t not just occur in a direct increase of market share in the specific industry, but also appear through access to distinct target customer groups.Obtaining access to resourcesA company may also benefit and boost its profits by increasing its access to resources. By investing in a foreign company, you can gain access to new technologies, resources, management skills and cooperation opportunities. All of these can help the business either save money or make more profit.While the access to resources, such as management skills, can be a rather indirect way to increase profits, other resources can provide a more direct boost, such as having the raw materials for your product at your disposal.Reducing the cost of productionRelated to the above point is the boost in profits through the reductions of production costs. If you gain access to raw materials, you can naturally manufacture your product cheaper than if you first had to buy the materials.Furthermore, vertical FDI deals with things like acquiring a production plant, which can boost profit by driving down the production costs â" if you can make the products in your own factory, you wonât need to spend money on buying the finished product from a third-party supplier.A common example of the ability to drive down the cost of production is making FDIs in countries with lower labor costs. Countries with lower labor costs can attract companies to transfer their factories elsewhere â" a contentious topic in the modern world.Simplifying its tax code and gaining tax benefitsCompanies can also benefit from FDI in terms of taxation and how their profits are taxed at home and abroad. How does FDI boost profit through taxation? There are a few different scenarios. The company could:Enjoy more profits from its income in the new country due to the foreign country offering a more beneficial tax code â" either thereâs less taxation in general or the rates are lower/more advantageous.Enjoy tax deduction in its home countr y from any profit it makes in a foreign country.Enjoy tax deduction simply for making a FDI â" countries can provide companies with tax benefits if they either invest in the foreign country or home countries of companies can allow tax deductions when FDI is made.The tax benefits can be directly related to income and profits but can also be indirectly linked with these aspects of the business. For example, RD in the new country might be taxed differently and the advantage of discovering new technologies can indirectly lead to bigger profits abroad and in the parent companyâs country.The above are the four main ways a company could profit from a foreign direct investment. Naturally, enjoying these benefits is not as straightforward as it may sound. Just as itâs difficult to start a business from scratch anywhere in the world, it can be difficult to replicate the success in another country or to gain a profitable market share in a country with established competition in the sector .EXAMPLES OF THE PROFITABLE BOOSTSSo, what does the above look in real life? Letâs consider Company A and the different ways it could manage to boost its profits.Company A, operating in Italy, would have a market share of 10% in the clothing sector. When it invests in the Chinese clothing company, it gains access to a new clothing market in China and gains an immediate market share of 3% in the country through the new company. In the future, it can boost its market share in both Italy and China.Company A might have also acquired a clothing factory in China. Since it doesnât have to buy the clothes it sells in Italy from a third-party seller, it can cut production costs and increase profits. A quirky example from real life is how Apple has been able to control the cost of making an iPhone by producing them in China. The Chinese workforce only amounts to 3.6% of the costs of the iPhone, according to the Economist.The above is not just necessarily a boost in profit in terms of lowe r cost of production, but could also provide benefits in terms of access to resources, such as better sewing technology. The Chinese clothing manufacturer could have technologies in place that create durable clothing with less money and this can help increase the public interest on the clothing line â" people will buy the t-shirts more because they stay in good condition for longer.Finally, Company A can experience a boost in profit through taxation. It can deduct part of the investment costs and gain a better tax advantage or it might direct some of its foreign profits into a country with a lower corporate tax rate.While the current tax planning strategies of major corporations are not always favorable to national economies, thereâs no denying the benefits companies can enjoy by investing in foreign companies and markets. According to Fortune, Americaâs largest companies have around $2.5 trillion stashed in foreign âtax havensâ; although not all of this is due to FDI.WHAT TO REMEMBER WITH FDI â" THE RRD RULEFDI is a clear example of a strategy that can provide companies better opportunities to grow and it can help increase profits through a number of ways. However, if a business is considering a FDI investment, it has to conduct proper due diligence â" similar to any investment type.There are plenty of things the business must take care of in terms of guaranteeing FDI success but in order to get started familiarize yourself with the so-called RRD rule. RRD stands for risks, regulations and diversification. These are three areas of focus for any company set to embark on FDI:Risks â" Like any investment, FDI can involve plenty of risks. The crucial fact about FDI is how the company will deal with a foreign country, which adds many unique risks into the equation. The political landscape is different and when you are investing in a developing economy, the political transformation can be heightened. Things such as political conflict or sudden nationali zation are not uncommon, especially in new economies in Africa.Regulations â" Since the company is dealing with a new country, it also has to deal with different legislation. In terms of FDI, countries can have strict rules and regulations in place and itâs important to clear these first before you even consider making a move on the country and its companies. The most obvious example of the regulatory impact is the complexity in China for joint ventures. Foreign companies can find it hard to team up with a local company and even entry to the Chinese market can be difficult, although the surrounding regulations have relaxed in recent times.Diversification â" When embarking on FDI strategy, diversification is as beneficial as it is for any other investment types. It can be helpful to consider different strategies â" horizontal, vertical or conglomerate â" to ensure your company doesnât put its eggs in a single basket. Furthermore, while entering a very different market can be problematic, vertical FDI could help provide even deeper market entry than purely following the horizontal strategy.The RRD rule can help a company focus on the right things in its evaluation of the validity of foreign direct investments. Mary Astell Englandââ¬â¢s First Feminist or Product of the Patriarchy - Literature Essay Samples
Mary Astell is often attributed as being Englandââ¬â¢s first feminist because of her writing which questioned gender politics of the late seventeenth century and early eighteenth century. For the time period, Astellââ¬â¢s writing was groundbreaking. She examined the nature of gender bias in a manner that overturned commonplace conceptions of gender and marriage and supported female autonomy and equal education opportunity. In A Serious Proposal to the Ladies, Astell explores the role of custom in the perpetuation of female subjugation, and she asserts that it would be most beneficial for women to ignore the custom of favoring the physical body over the mind in exchange for a focus on mental and spiritual development. Astell writes about the importance of female thought, and she strongly believes that women should focus on expanding their minds rather than obsessing over their bodies. In Some Reflections upon Marriage, Astell continues her early feminist examination of gender po litics. Astell examines the marriage customs of the time period, and she subverts from the idea that a womanââ¬â¢s one true purpose is to marry and have children. The rigidly gender biased climate that Astell lived in made her writing seem radical at the time, but modern feminist critics may recognize that Astellââ¬â¢s version of feminism was particularly conservative in comparison to modern feminism. While Astell was very much in favor of some degree of female autonomy, her writing demonstrates a clear influence from the overpowering patriarchal views of her environment that weakens her position as a feminist by modern perspectives. Some aspects of Astellââ¬â¢s argument on gender demonstrate an incredibly forward way of thinking for the 17th century and 18th century. In A Serious Proposal to the Ladies, Astell blames societal customs for the subjugation of women and the womenââ¬â¢s acceptance of their subjugate roles. She contends that societyââ¬â¢s emphasis on beauty and the physical self forces women to ignore their spiritual selves. Astell writes, ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢Tis custom therefore, that tyrant custom, which is the grand motive to all those irrational choices which we daily see made in the world, so very contrary to our present interest and pleasure, as well as to our futureâ⬠(356). Astellââ¬â¢s exploration of the source of gender bias is very much aligned with modern feminist ideology. There is still a modern belief that societal customs, such as the sexual objectification of women, continue to impact the perception of femininity and the role of women in society. In Feminist Interpretations of Mary Astell, Alice Sowaal and Penny A. Weiss note the contemporary ideology of Astellââ¬â¢s assertions. They write: Recent scholars have highlighted the modern feminist sentiment in these words. [â⬠¦] Astell suggests that women are disadvantaged compared to menââ¬âor that they have a certain ââ¬Å"incapacityâ⬠by virtue of their womanhoodââ¬âbut that their incapacity is a social construct rather than the product of nature or biology. (Sowaal and Weiss) Astellââ¬â¢s logic in A Serious Proposal to the Ladies seems strongly feministic in its defense of women and their capabilities. Like modern feminists, Astell recognizes the role that societal norms play in a womanââ¬â¢s ability to be seen as equal. In writing A Serious Proposal to the Ladies, Astell was not necessarily meaning to be a proponent of radical womenââ¬â¢s equality. Astell, a supporter of the Church of England, only wished to encourage women to seek the same comprehension skills as men so that the women could understand their religion on a deeper, more spiritual level. Astell ââ¬Å"argued that reason infuses human beings wit h divinityâ⬠(Johns 31). Her desires were to bring women closer to their spirituality, but this implies that she believed that women were, in fact, not then capable of using reason on their own accord. By modern feminist standards, it could be argued that Astell was slightly misogynistic in her perception of women being base and currently incapable of critical thought. Modern feminists may recognize that, although Astell seems to be in favor of some form of equality, her ideology is based on patriarchal assumptions of women. Astell writes, ââ¬Å"By a habitual inadvertency we render ourselves incapable of any serious and improving thought, till our minds themselves become as light and frothy as those things they are conversant aboutâ⬠(356). This ideology is inadvertently influenced by patriarchal views. Although Astell means to improve women with her writing, it can be seen that her perception of women was very much influenced by the societal norms of the time period. For Astell to believe that women need improvement, she is acknowledging the belief that women are, like patriarchal ideals suggest, insufficient in their current form and have something to improve upon. She presents women as being almost oblivious to and unconcerned with their proposed shortcomings. This notion can be viewed as a reinforcement of the emptyheaded female stereotype of Astellââ¬â¢s time and of today. Astells ââ¬Å"proto-feminism,â⬠as it is branded by William Kolbrener in Mary Astell: Reason, Gender, Faith, was certainly much more accommodating to the existing notion that women were inferior or flawed, whether from inherent corruption or societal influence, than modern feminism allows (193). Indeed, Astellââ¬â¢s feminism is so notably different from modern feminism that it necessitates a new w ord to describe it. ââ¬Å"Proto-feminismâ⬠perfectly describes Astellââ¬â¢s ideology. While Astell did produce feministic concepts, they were truly conservative by todayââ¬â¢s standards. Astellââ¬â¢s staunchly conservative religious and political views were in disagreement with any of her feminist ideals, and this weakens her position as a feminist, at least by modern perspectives. Kinnaird notes, ââ¬Å"In A Serious Proposal she makes no plea that the universities should admit women as well as men to enter the professions and take part in the public part of the nationâ⬠(Kinnaird 64). Astellââ¬â¢s concerns in A Serious Proposal were largely religious and did not necessarily champion womenââ¬â¢s rights as a whole. In fact, she wants her readers to recognize that she is not speaking too far in favor of womenââ¬â¢s equality. She writes, ââ¬Å"We pretend not that women should teach in the church, or usurp authority where it is not allowed them; permit us only to understand our own dutyâ⬠(361). She was more concerned with the female relationship to God than the female role in society when she explores the idea of the female autonomy, and she explicitly states that she does wish to change a womanââ¬â¢s role in society. Rather, she implies that women have false piety, and she offers them advice on how to improve their spiritualties. Astell is, by nature of the work itself, criticizing women in a manner that is incongruent with modern feminism. Her implication that women are incapable of understanding religion because they are suppressed by trivial customs casts a negative light on the female will, and it reinforces patriarchal stereotypes of women. In Reflections upon Marriage, Astell asserts a more firm grounding for future feminist ideals in her examination of a gender politics in marriage. Still, her conflicting views are clear, and the contradictive nature of her arguments makes it difficult for modern feminists to agree with her writing entirely. As Patricia Springborg notes in Mary Astell: Theorist of Freedom from Domination, the conflict between Astellââ¬â¢s religious and political views and her championing for womenââ¬â¢s causes ââ¬Å"seems anomalous to modern readersâ⬠(32). When reflecting upon marriage, Astell tells women to choose their husbands wisely because they may otherwise be stuck with a tyrannical leader for a husband. Astell also suggests that women might live more happily if they never marry. Her religious convictions pervade her reflection on marriage, as seen in the multiple Biblical references to female subjugation. Her feminist views and her religious views conflict a great deal in her Refl ections upon Marriage. She establishes as a fact that once married, males are superior and females are inferior. She offers no advice on how to improve female subjectivity in marriage; rather, she suggests that the one solution is that women must be more careful in choosing their husbands. Modern feminists, if examining female subjugation in marriage, might recognize and criticize the presence of male entitlement, which Astell does, but she also focuses on the female role in choosing a husband, as if females are partially to blame for their subordination. Modern feminism is less in favor of laying blame on women than Astellââ¬â¢s proto-feminism is. In conclusion, Mary Astells position as Englands first feminist is secure, but her feminism is very conservative in comparison to modern feminism. Astell theorized gender politics in a groundbreaking manner in A Serious Proposal to the Ladies and Reflections upon Marriage, but some of her ideology conflicts with a modern feminist perspective. Astells writing demonstrates shortcomings in its feminist assertions, and this can be attributed to her religious and political convictions and the predominant view of female inferiority that existed in her society. Although Astell was a supporter of female autonomy to some extent, effects of patriarchal ideology pervade her writing and weaken her feminist stance. In A Serious Proposal for the Ladies, she suggests that females are quite flawed and must improve in order to be considered intellectual equals. In her Reflections upon Marriage, her argument is disagreement with modern feminism in suggesting that women are the ones who must improve in stead of men. Astell was a feminist by definition of the late 17th century and early 18th century, but her acceptance of certain aspects of patriarchal ideology is condemned by modern feminism. Nudibranch Species, Behavior, and Diet
Enchanting to both divers and scientists, colorful nudibranchs (pronounced nooda-bronk and including Nudibranchia, suborders Aeolidida and Doridacea) inhabit the sea floors of oceans all over the world. The unattractively named sea slug comes in a fantastic array of shapes and neon-bright colors that they themselves cannot see. Many gastropods have a shell. Nudibranchs have a shell in their larval stage, but it disappears in the adult form. Gastropods also have a foot and all young gastropods undergo a process called ââ¬â¹Ã¢â¬â¹torsion in their larval stage. In this process, the entire top of their body twists 180 degrees on their foot. This results in the placement of the gills and anus above the head, and adults that are asymmetrical in form. The word nudibranch comes from the Latin word nudus (naked) and Greek brankhia (gills), in reference to the gills or gill-like appendages which protrude from the backs of many nudibranchs. They also may have tentacles on their heads that help them smell, taste, and get around. A pair of tentacles called rhinophores on the nudibranchs head have scent receptors that allow the nudibranch to smell its food or other nudibranchs. Because the rhinophores stick out and can be a target for hungry fish, most nudibranchs have the ability to withdraw the rhinophores and hide them in a pocket in their skin if the nudibranch senses danger. They range in size from microscopic to over a foot and a half longà and can weigh up to just over 3 pounds. If youve seen one nudibranch, you havent seen them all. They come in an astonishingly wide variety of colors and shapesââ¬âmany have brightly colored stripes or spots and flamboyant appendages on their head and back. Some species are transparent and/or bio-luminescent, like the Phylliroe. Nudibranchs thrive in an enormous variety of underwater environments, from shallow, temperate, and tropic reefs to Antarctica and even hydrothermal vents. cbpix/Getty Images Suborders Two main suborders of nudibranchs are dorid nudibranchs (Doridacea) and aeolid nudibranchs (Aeolidida). Dorid nudibranchs, like the Limacia cockerelli, breathe through gills that are on their posterior (back) end. Aeolid nudibranchs have cerataà or finger-like appendages that cover their back. The cerata can be a variety of shapesââ¬âthread-like, club-shaped, clustered, or branched. They have multiple functions, including breathing, digestion, and defense. Habitat and Distribution Nudibranchs are found in all the worlds oceans, from cold water to warm water. You might find nudibranchs in your local tide pool, while snorkeling or diving on a tropical coral reef, or even in some of the coldest parts of the ocean or in thermal vents. They live on or near the sea floor and have been identified at depths between 30 and 6,500 feet below the ocean surface. Diet Most Nudibranchs eat using a radula, a toothed structure that they use to scrape off prey from the rocks they cling to; some suck out the prey after predigesting its tissue with selected enzymes, rather like a wasp. They are carnivorous, so that prey includes sponges, coral, anemones, hydroids, barnacles, fish eggs, sea slugs, and other nudibranchs. Nudibranchs are picky eatersââ¬âindividual species or families of nudibranchs may eat only one kind of prey. Nudibranchs get their bright colors from the food they eat. These colors may be used for camouflage or to warn predators of the poison that lies within. The Spanish shawl nudibranch (Flabellina iodinea) feeds on a species of hydroid called Eudendrium ramosum, which possesses a pigment called astaxanthin that gives the nudibranch its brilliant purple, orange, and red coloration. Some nudibranchs, like the Blue Dragon, create their own food by eating coral with algae. The nudibranch absorbs the algaes chloroplasts (zooxanthellae) into the cerata, which acquire nutrients by photosynthesis using the sun to sustain the nudibranch for months. Others have evolved other ways of farming zooxanthellae, housing them in their digestive gland. Behavior The sea slugs can see light and dark, but not their own brilliant coloration, so the colors are not intended to attract mates. With their limited vision, their sense of the world is obtained through their rhinophores (on top of the head) and oral tentacles (near the mouth). Not all nudibranchs are colorful; some use defensive camouflage to match the vegetation and hide, some can change their colors to fit, some hide their bright colors only to bring them out to warn off predators. Nudibranchs move on a flat, broad muscle called a foot, which leaves a slimy trail. While most are found on the ocean floor, some can swim short distances in the water column by flexing their muscles. Some even swim upside down. Aeolid nudibranchs can use their cerata for defense. Some of their prey such as Portuguese man-of-wars have a specialized cell in their tentacles called nematocysts that contain a barbed or venomous coiled thread. Nudibranchs eat the nematocysts and store them in the nudibranchs cerata where they can be used late to sting predators. Dorid nudibranchs make their own toxins or absorb toxins them from their food and release those into the water when needed. Despite the unsavory or toxic taste they can present to their non-human predators, most nudibranchs are harmless to humans, except those like Glaucus atlanticus which consumes nematocytes and so may consider you a predator and sting. Reproduction and Offspring Nudibranchs are hermaphrodites, meaning that they have reproductive organs of both sexes. Because they cant move too far, too fast and are solitary in nature, its important for them to be able to reproduce if the situation presents itself. This region is home oh number of the largest freshwater fish, bird, and turtle species. There is also, an assortment of ecosystems embodied in this hotshot, comprising of dry evergreen, wet evergreen, and deciduous forests. There are also several patches of woodlands and scrubbings on karts limestone ridges, some in costal lands as well as dispersed heath forests. There are approximately 430 mammal species residing in the region; over seventy species and seven types are endemic. Over 280 amphibian species are found in the hotshot, but there is not high level of endemics outside of the genus level. The region has noteworthy freshwater fish creatures; there are over 1,260 recognized species (about 10% of the worldââ¬â¢s total freshwater fish). There are more than 1,260 bird species with over 60 being endemic. The floodplain wetlands and the rivers are absolutely essential for bird species conservation since population numbers have declined due to human expansion and hunting. The reptile population is one of the more prevalent species of the region. Almost 520 species of reptile reside there which more than 200 species being endemic and twelve genera. This Indo-Burma hotshot carries perhaps the largest assortment of freshwater turtles globally; there are exactly 53 species (57 including tortoises), signifying 20% of the worldââ¬â¢s species. A popular species is the Chitchatted, a striped narrow-headed turtle with a soft-shell, which can grow up to about 120 centimeters.
